Obituary for Gladys Dowdy Thigpen

Gladys Marie Dowdy Thigpen, 93, of Hopkinsville died at 4:30 a.m., Monday, December 17, 2018, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2018, at Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Philip Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

A native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, she was born September 30, 1925, the daughter of the late Wallace A. and Allie Dowdy. She graduated from Hopkinsville High School in 1943 and from Vanderbilt University in 1948. She was a homemaker and taught school while living in New Mexico and Texas.

She was a member and former President of the Petroleum Wives Club in Stavanger, Norway, and of the League of Women Voters of Hopkinsville-Christian County. She was a member of the ACBL Bridge Association and the Readers Guild. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Carolyn Fuqua Sunday School Class and also attended First Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Zealand B. Thigpen, Jr., and her brother, George W. Dowdy.

Survivors include her son, Z. B. "Ben" (Cheryl) Thigpen, III, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and her daughters, Page T. (Marion) Harris of Jasper, Georgia, and Julia T. (John) Crenshaw of Todd County, Kentucky, nine grandchildren, Rebecca T. Wilson, Heidi T. Thompson, Regan J. Medzhibzher, Samantha H. Chodavarapu, Rachel S. Harris, William B. Crenshaw, Helen G. Crenshaw, Margaux M. Thigpen, and Julia M. Thigpen, and eight great-grandchildren, Hayden W. Wilson, Caroline G. Wilson, Tessa C. Thompson, Reese M. Medzhibzher, Amelia Z. Thompson, Matthew B. Harris, Parker J. Medzhibzher, and Kali Chodavarapu.

Memorial contributions are suggested to First Baptist Church, First Christian Church or St. Luke Free Clinic.
