Obituary for Dorothy Mae Cochran

Dorothy Mae Cochran who went by the name “Dot”, 96, of Hopkinsville Kentucky, died on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the Same Swope Care Center of the Masonic Care Communities in Louisville Kentucky.

Private graveside services will be held at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A native of Mayfield, KY, she was born March 30, 1922 the daughter of the late Gabe Martin and Elsie Wiggins Martin. She married James Ralph Cochran, Sr., December 29, 1943 in Graves County, Kentucky. Dot with Ralph traveled extensively throughout the world including most of Europe to India, Japan and China.

She earned her teaching degree from Austin Peay State University. She began her working career at Bethel College in Hopkinsville as a young woman in her 20s. After obtaining her teaching degree, she went on to teach at Hopkinsville Community College and Christian County High School in the business education field called Distributive Education also known as DECA. She retired at the age of 75. While teaching, she continued her education and earned her Master’s Degree in Education.

In addition to teaching, she along with her husband Ralph, owned and operated Cornette’s Office Supply for 37 years.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Delta Epsilon, Fraternity of Business Educators and Perion Literary Club, the Hopkinsville Business and Professional Women’s Club, earning the Woman of the Year award in 1996; The Kiwanis Club. In 1974 she received the Outstanding Secondary Educator of America Award from Washington, D.C., she and her husband won the first Dogwood Festival award.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hopkinsville Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Bill Martin of Mayfield Kentucky and Harold Martin of Tampa Florida.

Survivors include her husband: James Ralph Cochran, Sr. of Louisville, KY; her son, James Ralph Cochran, Jr. of Dallas, TX; her daughter, Kay C. Cayce of Louisville, KY; her grandsons, Dr. Kenneth Cayce (Arien) of Columbus, OH, Chris Cayce (Justine) of Smyrna, TN; 4 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces and 2 nephews.
